Neuroanatomy: An Electronic Atlas is a program which requires Apple Computer's HyperCard program version 2.0 or higher. The program consists of a HyperCard stack and data files which are accessed by the stack. The Brain Atlas contains an Atlas Installer icon and a Brain Atlas 2.0 stack. Each has accompanying data files.
Installing the Atlas
1) Create a new file folder on the desktop and label it "Neuroatlas".
2) Insert the disks containing the Atlas into the floppy drive and drag their contents into the new folder on your hard drive.
*Note: It is important that the stack, Brain Atlas 2.0 and Atlas Installer, and all of their data files be in the same folder.
3) With the new folder "Neuroatlas" open, double click on the Atlas Installer icon. The Installer will ask to modify your system HyperCard program. Follow the directions on the screen. To abort the Installer select cancel.
4) With the new folder "Neuroatlas" open, double clicking on the Brain Atlas 2.0 stack will start the program. Clicking on the data files will not launch the program. The first time that the program is opened, you may be asked to locate the HyperCard Home card. (Please refer to your Macintosh Reference manual.)
Navigating the Atlas
After the title cards, the Brain Atlas "main menu" appears.
Your choices will be "Coronal", "Axial", "Sagittal", and "Surface" sections. Click on the picture representing the desired view. Next you will see an enlarged view of the chosen picture with a grid overlying it. You may choose a cross section by clicking directly on the red grid line at the location you wish to view. (You must click directly on the red line.)
Exit: Select the "File" option from the top menu bar. Click and hold the mouse button down. Highlight the option "Quit HyperCard" and release the mouse button.
Help: Select the "Atlas Help" option from the top menu bar. You will be presented with an electronic copy of this manual.
Note: When viewing a pictorial index, all other HyperCard functions (menu options, command options, etc.) are temporarily suspended. You must choose a picture or a grid line to proceed. Options are reinstated when the chosen cross section and its card appear.
Format
• After you choose a section from the pictorial index, the chosen section will be shown on the right side of the screen.
• On the left will be a card with a list of structures. By clicking on a structure name, an arrow, outline, or pattern will identify the chosen structure. This format is used throughout the Atlas.
• Each cross section may have one to six accompanying cards containing a list of structures which can be identified.
• Additional cards can be accessed by clicking the arrows at the bottom of the card.
• When all cards for a chosen section have been viewed, clicking the arrow on the lower right corner of the card will advance to the next cross section. Each stack can be navigated in its entirety by using the arrows at the bottom of the cards.
Buttons
There are buttons at the bottom of each card. Each button has a specific function.
Show Section: This button places a small picture in the upper right corner of the screen which indicates the location of the brain cross section being viewed.
Options: This button produces a "pull-down" menu from which you can access other cross sectional views. Choosing another cross sectional view will take you to the pictorial index of the chosen view from which you can choose the desired section.
Test: This button accesses the Atlas' testing format. When selected, a card with buttons will be seen on the left and the image cross section being tested will be on the right. A structure will be identified randomly on the cross section.

• You have the option of selecting the correct answer by using a "pull-down" menu accessed by clicking the button labeled "Select by Multiple Choice".
• By holding the mouse button down, you should highlight the correct answer in the list and then release the mouse button when your chosen answer is highlighted.
• If the incorrect answer is chosen, the location of the structure you chose will be identified and another opportunity at choosing the correct answer will be given.
• If you do not know the answer, you may obtain the correct response by clicking on the button labeled "Show Answer".

• If you do not want to identify the selected item, you may advance to another item by clicking on the button labeled "Next". You may quit the testing format by selecting the "Stop" button.
• If you want a quick review of the anatomy associated with the cross section shown, choose the "Quick Review" button and you will be shown each labeled item for a particular cross section.
Note: When using the testing format, all other HyperCard functions (menu options, command options, etc.) are temporarily suspended. You must click the "Stop" button on the testing format or quick review cards to reinstate HyperCard menu options or to quit viewing the Atlas.
Caution: Neuroanatomy: An Electronic Atlas uses HyperCard to provide a user friendly environment for ease of navigation. The program uses external commands and functions to enhance the capabilities of HyperCard. The scripts of the stacks have been deliberately locked to prevent accidental damage to the program. Attempts to unlock or manipulate the scripts or resource files may render the program inoperable.
